Eusebius of Caesarea · a new plain-English translation from the Greek
pr| Eusebius of Pamphilus, bishop of Caesarea in Palestine: On the Place Names in the Divine Scripture. Paulinus, holy man of God: as a kind of prelude to the undertaking you set before me, I discharged in my earlier work the subjects I had promised. First I rendered into the Greek tongue the designations of the nations throughout the inhabited world, which stand in the divine Scripture under Hebrew names; next I made a survey of ancient Judea drawn from every book, marking out within it the allotments of the twelve tribes; and besides these, as in the form of a drawing, I sketched the image of their once-famous mother city, I mean Jerusalem, and of the temple in it, adding the notes that relate to the places. Now in this work, next in order and following on those, which were prepared beforehand to serve the usefulness of the whole undertaking, I shall join on your own design: setting out, for the cities and villages recorded in the divine Scripture in their ancestral tongue, their identification, in what regions they lie, and what people in our day call them, whether the same as the ancients or changed to other names. From the whole of the God-inspired Scripture, then, I shall gather what is sought, and I shall set out each item in alphabetical order, for easy grasp of the things that turn up scattered through the readings.
