If, then, it is incredible either that the apostles were ignorant of the full content of their preaching, or that they did not deliver the entire order of the rule to everyone, let us see whether it might not rather be that the apostles taught simply and fully, but the churches, through their own fault, received it differently from how the apostles delivered it. All these scruple-mongering provocations you will find the heretics resorting to. They seize on churches the apostle took to task: 'O senseless Galatians, who has cast a spell over you?' and: 'You were running so well — who hindered you?' and that opening itself: 'I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you in grace, for a different gospel.' Likewise it is written to the Corinthians that they were still carnal, fed on milk, not yet fit for solid food, thinking they knew something when they did not yet know how one ought to know. When they hold up rebuked churches against us, let them also believe those churches were corrected. But let them also acknowledge those other churches, of whose faith and knowledge and conduct the apostle is glad, and for whom he gives thanks to God — churches which today, all the same, mix the very same rule of instruction with those that were rebuked.
