Others, more civilized about it, reckon that the Christians' god is the sun, since it has become known that we pray facing east, or that we make a festival of Sunday. Yet what do you do that is any different? Don't a good many of you, out of a fondness for worship, move your lips even toward the sun's rising when you address the heavenly powers? You, certainly, are the ones who have granted the sun a place in the roster of the seven days, and out of those days you have singled one out to determine on which you should skip the bath, or put it off till evening, or arrange for leisure and a proper meal. And in doing this you are straying, and straying from your own religions into foreign ones — for the Sabbath-feast, the pure meal, the Jewish rites of lamp-lighting and fasting with unleavened bread, and prayers by the shore, all belong to the Jews, and are certainly foreign to your gods. So, returning now from this detour — you who fault us over the sun and its day, mark how closely we stand nearby: we are not far removed from Saturn and your Sabbaths!
